Here’s how it works:
1. Pay Your Doula First
Most insurance companies won’t pay the doula directly.
You pay for prenatal visits, labor & birth support, and postpartum visits.
2. Get a Superbill from Your Doula
A superbill is a detailed invoice that includes:
Doula name & business info
Dates of service
Service codes (CPT/HCPCS) and diagnosis codes (ICD-10)
Fees for each visit
3. Submit to Your Insurance
Send the superbill to your insurance company (via mail or online portal).
Ask your insurance if doula services are covered under maternity, prenatal, or childbirth support.
Keep a copy for your records.
4. What You May Get Back
Insurance may reimburse part or all of the cost.
Coverage depends on your plan — some pay a percentage, some pay a flat amount.
You may also be able to use FSA or HSA funds for payment.
5. Helpful Tips
Contact your insurance before birth to ask about reimbursement rules.
Keep detailed notes of all visits.
If you live in a state where Medicaid covers doulas, ask your doula about direct billing.
Summary: Pay your doula → get a superbill → submit to insurance → receive reimbursement.
